OpenOffice

Apache OpenOffice is the world renowned office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, database, graphic editing. This program works on most operating systems and is compatible in various languages. It has the ability to save files in an open standard format while being able to read others as well. This is a free program that rivals the Microsoft Office Suite. Open Office can read and write files from other common office software packages.

Overview & Installation

The OpenOffice installer includes the following modules for installation: Writer, Calc, Draw, Impress, Base, and Math. These modules are comparable to the standard Microsoft Suite tools that you may have grown accustomed to such as Word, Excel, and Powerpoint. OpenOffice can carry these same office productivity functions. The only weakness that we found is that there is no module that is comparable to Microsoft Outlook.

Modules for OpenOffice Download

writerWriter (word processor) – Writer is a processing tool for creating documents, letters, books, reports, newsletters, brochures, memos and other written materials. It has the ability to incorporate graphics and objects from other components. This program can export saved files as HTML, XHTML, XML, PDF, DOC, DOCX and more.

calcCalc (spreadsheet) – Calc is the equivalent of Excel. It has analysis tools, charting, and tons of other features to help understand a lot of data. Like Excel, it also has a book of formulas that work the same way. This program can also save files in Excel format and many others as well.

impressImpress (presentations) – Impress is the Powerpoint alternative. It includes multimedia presentation tools, such as special effects, drawing capability, sound and video clips along with animation.

drawDraw (vector graphics) – Draw is a vector drawing tool that can produce diagrams, 3-D displays, flowcharts and more. This is also a place to create your own library of images so you can use it in the other OpenOffice modules.

baseBase (database) – Base is the Microsoft Access alternative. This database program offers a simple interface along with many similar capabilities such as creating forms, reports, queries, tables and relations. In addition, it also has unique features to edit relationships from a diagram view. Base incorporates HSQLDB as its default relational database engine. It can also use dBASE, Microsoft Access, MySQL, or Oracle, or any ODBCcompliant or JDBC-compliant database.

mathMath (formula editor) – Math is a formula and equation editor for creating and editing mathematical formulas, analogous to Microsoft Equation Editor. Formulas can be embedded inside other OpenOffice documents. Use this program to create complex equations that include symbols or characters not available in standard font sets.

OpenOffice Insights

Some people feel that Formula editor is better than the cut-and-paste equation editor in Microsoft office especially when file size become too great.

Writers that have used both Microsoft Word and OpenOffice Writer have reported that combining files have been less buggy for OpenOffice because one file will not automatically corrupt the rest of the chapter files.

If you are switching between operating systems such as Linux, Mac or Windows, then it is easier to use OpenOffice since file formats are consistent throughout all the systems whereas in Microsoft, one could experience problems.
